Exciting day in Manchester with the new mirrorless Canon EOS R.
Canon put their new EOS R camera in my hands and we had a morning to shoot various stations. Not enough time to get to grips with the new layout of this slightly smaller, but very definitely Canonesque body. Great feel to it and the ergonomics are mostly perfect for my hands. I particularly loved the electronic viewfinder, and the new lens ring (or adapter ring) customisable to ISO, shutter speed or aperture. Not so sure about the touchbar and the AE button was in a slightly difficult to reach place. I’m not a vlogger so the flippy screen was not high on my priority list, but it was so useful getting stills from low and high angles. Whatever you do - don’t mention the single SD card slot.
Need some time to get used to all this camera can do - but we should remember that this is Edition 1. And Canon was at pains to point out that this is not a replacement for your DSLR but an adjunct; a new addition to the Canon family. I cant help but feel that this Prosumer model is the trial run for a shortly to be released Professional body that remedies any of the so called gripes and shortcomings that many photographers have aired on YouTube. But in the end - I loved it. There’s no doubt Canon has put their investment into the new EF lens mount and the new lenses are stunning, especially the 50mm 1.2 - so sharp.
